Starting Over…. As an Entrepreneur

Please donate to the GoFundMe to help these micro-entrepreneurs get started. If you know of (or are) a recently displaced worker with an entrepreneurial dream, please let us know about them at academy@businessflare.org

For laid off workers, launching a business may seem the best path for survival. Tough times breed a different type of entrepreneur.

“With the economy tanking, lots of people are striking out on their own. Some never even thought of starting a business until they got laid off. Others kicked around the idea but never found the time or the passion to pursue it. Now, launching a start-up seems like a better bet than taking on an endless job hunt. Call them entrepreneurs by necessity.” - Wall Street Journal, May 11, 2009.

There are plenty of examples of successful entrepreneurs and small businesses launching during economic downturns. In fact, it is this type of circumstance - survival - that can unleash incredible creativity, and the usual “risk” of starting a business is diminished greatly in the face of unemployment and uncertainty.

The BusinessFlare Academy is a not-for-profit originally formed to provide economic development education and training for local government elected officials and managers. However, in the face of the COVID-19 economic crisis, we have adjusted our mission to focus on assisting economic growth and recovery in the cities by helping would be entrepreneurs, that are recently unemployed due to the downturn, with heading down the awesome path of starting and growing their own business.

The BusinessFlare Academy Entrepreneurship Program is designed to provide assistance to budding entrepreneurs that have recently lost their jobs due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Program includes...

Assistance with business formation and registration with the State of Florida;
Securing an Employer ID Number from the IRS;
Guidance to opening a business bank account (what documentation is required);
Assistance with Veteran and/or Minority Business Certification with the State of Florida;
Registration with Dun and Bradstreet;
Local Business Tax Receipt requirements;
Real Estate and Market Analysis assistance;
General guidance and mentoring.

In addition to technical assistance, the BusinessFlare Academy wishes to provide financial assistance to these potential entrepreneurs to help take their dreams into reality.

We have started a GoFundMe fundraising drive to raise money to assist these future entrepreneurs with State of Florida LLC Registration Fees ($125), local Business Tax Receipt application Fees ($25-225), and $100 to seed their business bank account. Total assistance (contingent on fundraising) is estimated at $250-500 per entrepreneur.
